WAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.

The time was 1942 and Peggy Carter was the darling of the London part of Oceania (or, what used to be Great Britain). She was part of the Inner Circle, being allowed access to SHIELD files on people and topics, enjoying a clean and comfortable life, and given the choice to turn off her telescreen for a brief period of time. She was a loyal member and follower of the government. If she was told that two plus two equaled five, she would believe it; that's how loyal she was.

In a symbolic act of friendship -- and in a publicity act to keep the masses in check --, Peggy was matched with her American counterpart, Captain Steve Rogers, who had been genetically altered by Dr. Abraham Erksine. Steve was to be the first of a long line of "super soldiers", however, a spy from the Eruasia nation killed Erksine before anymore could be created. What once was just a sham became something more when Steve and Peggy fell in love. Because Steve was from the Outer Circle and, thus, not used to the luxuries he was now being treated to, he shared his fascinations with Peggy, stating that he only started wearing shoes everyday when he was chosen for the project. Along with comments like these and being matched, all of Peggy's small, forgotten reservations about the Party soon became large, monstrous doubts. She realized that many of the truths she had been told, and followed, her whole life were lies. Eventually, she was able to come to two truths. One, the worst crime that one can inflict upon themselves and others are the destruction of the truths and freedoms that make us who we are; and, two, freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.

"Instinct is like a sense of duty -- one can confuse it with loyalty very easily."

Although, Steve agreed with her, he was more hesitant and less willing to act upon these thoughts of autonomy and nonconformity. Although even the slightest thought of freedom was warrant enough for a visit from SHIELD, Steve did not report Peggy. Her crime was dreaming of freedom (although she later confessed to false crimes) while Steve's crime was loving Peggy. As such, they were both punished accordingly; Peggy was apprehended by SHIELD and tortured until she "betrayed" Steve, relinquishing her love for him, while Steve was shot down over the Arctic (the Party had fears of what Steve was capable of and thought that an honourable, mess-free death was safer). Deemed a success, Peggy was then reintegrated back into Oceania society, yet, she was still able to retain her feelings for Steve and ideas of freedom for her nation. Before she died, she succeeded in passing down her thoughts and hopes of freedom to her niece, Sharon.
